Ohio Calf Solutions founders, Tom and Elaine, have been married and farming together for over 40 years. Their favorite part of owning and running a dairy operation is watching each calf grow and mature while spending time with family on the farm. For Tom and Elaine, the tradition of raising livestock goes back generations and continues, today, with their grandkids. You’ll find their grandsons helping out on the farm after school and participating in Knox County 4-H.
Through experience, Tom and Elaine have identified the most effective protocols and products for improving calf nutrition, immunity, and comfort. Ohio Calf Solutions proudly serves as a resource for other farmers, helping them improve calf health and operational efficiency.
When we connect with a customer, we often start the relationship with a farm visit. When we arrive at their farm, our first step is to listen. As dairy farmers, we know the many challenges farmers face when raising cattle. We don't make assumptions or judgements. We collaborate with the customer and develop a plan (protocols, products, employee training) for improving calf health.
As mentioned above, we've faced many challenges over the years. We can relate to what you're going through, whether it's losing calves, dealing with scours, or another problem.
Years ago, we reached out for help and received varying advice from the feed company, calf specialist, and veterinarian. One said, "Your calf pen isn't clean enough," even though they never set foot on our farm. The other one said, "You are using the wrong nipples and need a clostridia vaccine." In addition, the veterinarian told us to improve colostrum protocols, feed within 2 hours, dip navels, the list goes on. But, we were ALREADY doing these things.
After all of this, we were still losing calves. At this point, the concern for our calves was keeping us up at night. Once again, we reached out to the calf specialist. This time, he recommended that we change our milk replacer to Denkavit, a European company with a branch in New York.
A Denkavit representative came to our farm. We were hesitant about her witnessing our calf problems firsthand. We were reluctant to feed the volume of milk replacer Denkavit recommended, as higher milk volumes led to scours in the past. We were also worried about the cost.
Here's what happened when we started using the Denkavit milk replacer:
Through our challenges and triumphs, we've discovered the most effective protocols and products for improving calf health. We don't recommend products to other farmers unless they are part of our daily routine and we've experienced the benefits firsthand.
